Aryna Sabalenka vs Barbora Krejcikova LIVE: Australian Open 2024 scores and results after Novak Djokovic result

Aryna Sabalenka vs Barbora Krejcikova LIVE: Australian Open 2024 scores and results after Novak Djokovic result

Australian Open Increases Prize Money By $60 Million

Novak Djokovic is through to the Australian Open semi-finals once again after withstanding the challenge of Taylor Fritz in a brutal four-set battle. The defending champion raised his game after the American fought back to level the match at a set all, before wrapping up a 7-6 4-6 6-2 6-3 win in three hours and 45 minutes.

The result extended Djokovic’s winning run at Melbourne Park to 33 matches but Fritz threw everything he had at the 10-time champion. Although his record against the 24-time grand slam champion is now 0-9, Fritz pushed Djokovic across two draining and hard-fought opening sets before the 36-year-old ran away with the contest.

Djokovic will take on the victor between fourth seed Jannik Sinner and fifth seed Andrey Rublev, with the pair headlining the night session as the second match on Rod Laver Arena.

Earlier, in the women’s singles, US Open champion Coco Gauff reached the Australian Open semi-finals for the first time after battling past unseeded Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk in three sets on Rod Laver Arena. Both players looked nervous in an error-strewn match, but Gauff put her foot down in the deciding set to win 7-6 6-7 6-2 in over three hours. Gauff will play the winner of the match between Aryna Sabalenka, the defending champion who is yet to drop a set, and another former major winner in 2021 French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova.

Australian Open LIVE: Aryna Sabalenka vs Barbora Krejcikova

Sabalenka 4-2 Krejcikova* – Krejcikova breaks!

If there is one weakness in the Sabalenka game, though, it would be herself. A ragged game with a double fault and wild forehand swing gets Krejcikova an instant look at 0-40.

Fair play to Krejcikova, she breaks back with her second winner of the game.

Australian Open LIVE: Aryna Sabalenka vs Barbora Krejcikova

*Sabalenka 4-1 Krejcikova – Sabalenka breaks!

Eh… it’s not really fair when Sabalenka is adding touch and drop shots to her powerful game, is it? A lovely backhand drop shot clips the line and gets the defending champion to 0-30.

It puts more pressure on the Krejcikova service game and although the ninth seed gets back to 30-30, Sabalenka’s power is too much and it’s soon 30-40 and the chance for a double break.

Second serve…. and that’s music to Sabalenka’s ears. She crushes the return to Krejcikova’s backhand and the Czech can’t keep it in play. Too good.

Australian Open LIVE: Aryna Sabalenka vs Barbora Krejcikova

Sabalenka 3-1 Krejcikova*

Sabalenka has made a very assured start on serve – seeing the ball clearly and striking her forehand cleanly to start the match.

It is honestly very hard to see who can beat the defending champion when she is in this kind of form. Krejcikova is up against it already.

Australian Open LIVE: Aryna Sabalenka vs Barbora Krejcikova

*Sabalenka 2-1 Krejcikova – Sabalenka breaks!

Sabalenka starts to find her groove after running to flash a massive forehand winner down the line.

It gets her to 15-30 on Krejcikova’s serve and the Czech looks to come into the net on the first pressure point of the match.

But Krejcikova’s volley goes long and it gives Sabalenka two break points: she only needs one, after following a powerful backhand return up the line with an angled forehand.

Australian Open LIVE: Aryna Sabalenka vs Barbora Krejcikova

*Sabalenka 0-1 Krejcikova

Incredibly, Sabalenka has only spent four hours and four minutes on court through her first four matches, while Krejcikova is at eight hours.

Krejcikova gets to 40-0 on serve but Sabalenka sends a statement as she crushes the second-serve return for a winner.

Sabalenka goes long, though, so Krejcikova gets the opening hold.

Australian Open LIVE: Aryna Sabalenka vs Barbora Krejcikova

Right, here we go: Sabalenka and Krejcikova are out on court, on the Rod Laver Arena.

Sabalenka, the defending champion, has been in brilliant form and has dropped just 11 games on her way to the quarters.

Krejcikova, who has battled back from a loss of form and injuries after winning the 2021 French Open, is looking to reach her second grand slam semi-final.

She had a good win over the impressive teenager Mirra Andreeva in the previous round.

Krejcikova will serve first – and for some reasons we are still waiting for fans to come in.

So… the schedule is in a right mess tonight at the Australian Open. The night schedule is running two hours late… which means Jannik Sinner and Andrey Rublev’s match might not start until 11pm at least.

Both the BBC and Eurosport have reported that Aryna Sabalenka, the defending champion, and Barbora Krejcikova were asked if they would move to the Margaret Court Arena, and both players said no.

Have Sinner and Rublev been asked to move?
